Step 1 • Check Eligibility

Cabin Crew Eligibility Criteria

Let’s make sure you meet the physical, educational, medical, and documentation guidelines set by DGCA and major airlines. I’ve broken down all the requirements below to help you clear this first step with confidence.

📏 1. Height & Reach Parameters

Airlines require us to reach critical safety equipment inside overhead bins quickly. In my experience, your reach capacity is just as important as your physical height. You can test your tiptoe reach using our interactive Reach Self-Check, or run a full scan using our Advanced Eligibility Check. Here is the exact airline breakdown:

Note: Some international airlines (e.g., Emirates, Qatar Airways) require an arm reach of 212 cm on tiptoes instead of a specific minimum height.

🎂 2. Age & Passport Requirements

Before we can get you onboard, you will need to meet these essential age guidelines and document checks:

  • Age Limit: Freshers must be between 18 and 27 years of age. For experienced cabin crew, the upper limit can extend up to 32–35 years depending on the airline.
  • Indian Passport: A valid Indian passport is mandatory at the time of application or training. It must have at least 6 to 12 months of validity remaining.
  • ECNR Status: Passports must have ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) status to facilitate international flying schedules.

👁️ 3. Vision & Medical Fitness

Keeping passenger safety in mind means we must meet high standards of health and physical readiness:

  • Visual Acuity: Corrected vision must be 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other, or 6/6 in both. While glasses are generally not permitted on duty, wearing soft contact lenses is fully allowed.
  • Color Vision: Normal color vision is mandatory. Candidates with color blindness are disqualified during the medical check.
  • Medical Standards: You must obtain a medical fitness certificate from a DGCA-approved medical doctor, verifying no history of major heart, lung, or mental illnesses.

⚠️ Warning: Normal color vision is an absolute, non-negotiable requirement. Candidates with color blindness (partial or complete) are disqualified during DGCA medical exams, and no corrective lenses or operations can bypass this rule.

🎓 4. Educational & Language Skills

The minimum entry qualifications are actually quite accessible, meaning you don’t need a luxury aviation degree to get started:

  • Academic Qualification: Minimum completion of 10+2 (Higher Secondary School) from any recognized Indian board. Higher degrees (Graduation) are not mandatory but helpful for promotions.
  • Language Fluency: Candidates must speak clear, fluent English and Hindi. Spoken clarity, pleasant modulation, and lack of strong regional accents are checked during interviews.
  • Announcement Reading: You will be asked to read safety cards and announcement scripts to evaluate your pronunciation.

⚖️ 5. BMI (Body Mass Index) Norms

Airlines enforce Body Mass Index (BMI) parameters strictly to ensure safety, easy mobility down narrow cabin aisles, and overall fitness standards:

  • Female Candidates: The target BMI range is 18 to 22.
  • Male Candidates: The target BMI range is 18 to 25.
  • Strictness: Exceeding or falling below these bounds can lead to medical reviews or temporary suspension until the weight is corrected.

My Tip: Make sure to use the BMI Calculator to check your target weight range.

🎨 6. Tattoos & Visible Scars

Airlines allow tattoos only if they are completely invisible while in uniform. Since uniform styles typically include short sleeves and knee-length skirts, tattoos in the following zones will hold you back:

  • Hands, fingers, wrists, and arms.
  • Face, neck, ears, and collarbone.
  • Lower legs and ankles.

My Tip: Use our interactive Tattoo & Scar Check to visually test if your tattoo lies within a restricted cabin crew zone. Please don’t try to hide tattoos with makeup or bandages during physical assessments—it’s not allowed. If you have natural birthmarks or tiny scars, don’t worry; these are usually fine and can be discussed during medical checks.

🏊 7. Swimming Requirements

Knowing how to swim and survive in the water is one of the most critical safety skills we are tested on:

  • Domestic Flights: Most Indian domestic airlines (like IndiGo, Akasa Air) do not mandate swimming skills at the interview stage, though it is considered a major advantage.
  • International Flights & Air India: Swimming is mandatory. Candidates must be able to swim at least 50 meters unassisted without a life jacket during the training phase.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

You can attend interviews with ceramic or clear braces, but they must be removed before you begin your official airline training. Standard metal braces are generally not permitted during active flight duty.

It is mandatory for international routes and airlines operating widebody aircraft (like Air India). Domestic airlines often do not require swimming at the interview stage, but you will undergo basic water survival training where swimming skills are highly beneficial.

Yes, as long as your vision can be corrected to 6/6 using contact lenses. Most airlines require you to wear contact lenses during duty, though a few allow neat, thin-framed glasses.

No, the basic screening criteria is completion of 12th grade. During the initial interview rounds, both are evaluated equally based on communication and grooming. However, a graduate degree helps in faster promotions to Cabin Supervisor or Cabin Manager roles.

Yes. Historically, married candidates were restricted, but currently, most major Indian domestic and international airlines allow married candidates to apply for cabin crew roles.
